Let’s face it: A lot of fabrics aren’t cheap, so I used higher-price textiles in small but impactful ways. And that’s an important design lesson: If you’re really in love with a certain textile that is expensive, don’t just assume you can’t use it. Even a single yard can go a long way. Make a single throw pillow out of it to star on your sofa, then cast other more affordable pillows to support your prized piece of material.

When it comes to upholstering the seating and doing the window treatments—the places where you really rack up the yardage—the trick is to go for extremely affordable options. Drapery and upholstery can eat up your budget faster than almost anything else, so you need to stay focused on the less expensive options when you’re using this much yardage. We went with super-affordable options, mostly because it’s just not my style to spend a ton of money on my own home. Yes, I will spend money on some nice things, but I don’t think every single purchase has to be that big-ticket item. Here’s the truth: Most of the big things in our beach house weren’t pricey, and some of my very favorite things barely cost anything. When I’m at the beach with my dogs, with sand on my feet and wet towels everywhere, it would be impossible for me to enjoy myself if I were worrying about furniture upholstered in fabric that cost $150 per yard.
